To use black and silver number plates, your vehicle must be officially classed as a historic vehicle by the DVLA.

That means:

  • The vehicle must be at least 40 years old, and

  • It must be registered in the historic tax class

Example: In 2025, vehicles registered before 1 January 1985 qualify

  • You cannot put black, silver plates on newer cars that’s illegal.

  • They must still display your official registration number exactly as issued.

  • No decorative fonts, spacing, or symbols allowed.
