To use black and silver number plates, your vehicle must be officially classed as a historic vehicle by the DVLA.
That means:

The vehicle must be at least 40 years old, and
-
It must be registered in the historic tax class
Example: In 2025, vehicles registered before 1 January 1985 qualify
-
You cannot put black, silver plates on newer cars that’s illegal.
-
They must still display your official registration number exactly as issued.
-
No decorative fonts, spacing, or symbols allowed.
